Run For Cover: Ayanna Witter-Johnson – Roxanne

March 19, 2012

The Police better start running now, Ayanna Witter-Johnson is coming to get them, for real. This is an absolutely gob-smacking version of their signature song ‘Roxanne’ and Ayanna, the only non-American to win the legendary amateur night at the Apollo in Harlem, NY, does it every bit of justice plus a little bit more. Performed for the Mahogany Blog Sessions, you can also see one of her original compositions ‘Unconditionally’ here.

But while I have your attention, you must get your download fingers on Ayanna Witter-Johnson’s EP Truthfully that came out in September 2011. Including this version of ‘Roxanne’, Truthfully examines and explores 21st century womanhood – be it the personal or the shared female experience. I am particularly in love with ‘Aint I A Woman?’, the first track on the EP and inspired by the speech that Sojourner Truth, the woman’s right activist and abolitionist, gave at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention in 1851. Worth all 500 pennies.
