D’Angelo: I know some things have changed this I’ve last seen you…

February 2, 2012

…some for the good and some for the bad, baby.

I can’t believe it’s actually happening. The Voodoo Tour seems like another life time ago – standing in line outside Grosse Freiheit, feeling like it was destiny that D’Angelo’s only stop in Germany was to be in my hometown of Hamburg [I was 17 and the universe revolved around me, of course].  So now, 11 years later, he’s back on my doorstep and if all goes well, I’ll be there to see his return at Brixton Academy this Friday.

I’ve been watching all the YouTube videos – Stockholm, Copenhagen, Paris, Amsterdam – but it still seems a little unreal. Michael Archer has taken on a lot of guises in his sporadic career that now [unbelievably] spans eighteen years. Shy-guy piano man, cocksure frontman and an accidentally on-purpose sex symbol that no red-blooded female could ignore, mysteriously absent without leave for over eleven years, rumoured crack addict, overweight mug shots and court appearances, laying down vocals on the odd track here and there… It is only clear now, with comeback tour in full flow, that D’Angelo has turned himself into legend, a cult figure with a cult following. And tomorrow, we are all due in church.
