Hauschka – Radar [for FADER TV]

May 22, 2011

Just found this performance of ‘Radar’ that pianist Hauschka did for Fader TV that I think is fantastic. Building on avant-garde composer John Cage’s idea of  prepared piano, Hauschka (aka Volker Bertelmann, who, has you might have guessed from the accent, is from Germany] really pushes his instrument and it isn’t until you see him live that you really realise how much he can do with it.

Bertelmann recently dropped his new album Salon Des Amateurs – named after a club space in Düsseldorf that, as he alludes to in the above video, nurtures creative freedom and makes space for music there might not otherwise be space for. The tracks on Salon… are his own unique take on dance music, in particular house and techno, and that really shows in this performance as he seems to have turned his piano into a bit of a drum machine. Vorsprung durch Technik!
